Recording shows
Our app can record live TV, but please read this first.
What you'll need
- An OTG adapter for Fire Stick. It's a short cable with a micro-USB plug for the Fire Stick, a micro-USB socket for the power cable, and a regular USB socket for your drive. Search "OTG cable for Fire Stick". The Fire TV Cube doesn't need one; it has a USB port built in.
- A USB flash drive. A USB 3.0 drive between 32 GB and 128 GB is ideal. Larger hard drives may need their own power supply.
- The Fire Stick's own power adapter. Plug it into the wall, not into your TV's USB port, so there's enough power for the drive too.
Step 1: Connect the drive
Unplug the power cable from your Fire Stick.
Plug the OTG adapter into the Fire Stick's micro-USB power port, then plug the power cable into the adapter.
Plug your USB drive into the adapter's USB socket.
Wait for the Fire Stick to start up. You should see a message that a USB drive was found.
Step 2: Get the drive ready
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → USB Drive to check the Fire Stick can see your drive.
If the drive isn't recognized, choose the option to format it as external storage. Fire TV only reads drives formatted as FAT32. Formatting erases everything on the drive, so use an empty one.
Don't choose "Format to Internal Storage". That's for moving apps, not for saving recordings.
Step 3: Point the app at your drive
Open our app and go to Settings → Other → Recording.
Choose Recordings folder and select your USB drive.
That's it. New recordings now save to the drive instead of your Fire Stick.
Good to know
- Keep the drive plugged in. Recordings are only on the drive, so if it's unplugged they won't show up or play.
- Check the recordings folder after updates. If the app is reinstalled or reset, it may go back to saving on the Fire Stick. Repeat Step 3.
- Android TV and Google TV boxes: many have a USB port built in, so you can plug the drive straight in. Some block apps from recording to USB drives; if yours does, don't record to the box's own storage.
